Educational Objective
Our practice consists of 5 internal medicine physicians, 1 family medicine physician and 3 advanced practice practitioners with a full spectrum psychiatry service (3 psychiatrists and 2 psychiatric nurse practitioners) embedded within the office. Each of our practitioners has special interests including dermatology, women’s care, obesity, osteopathic manipulative medicine and geriatrics / palliative care. We focus on preventive care efforts and stress the importance of proactive and engaged relationships with our patients.
The objectives of this rotation are to expose residents to the unique challenges and opportunities of practicing medicine in a rural setting. Franklin Health Internal Medicine is a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic providing comprehensive primary care to a large rural catchment of patients. During this unique rotation, trainees will be exposed to a wide breadth of outpatient internal medicine in the rural western mountains of Maine.
Experiences and Procedures
- Trainees will independently see patients with preceptor supervision in order to expand their skills and clinical experiences in the outpatient setting in order to have trainees experience independent rural medicine in a safe and structured setting.
- Trainees will be exposed to common office-based procedures with the opportunity to observe and perform these procedures, including major joint injections, cryotherapy and skin biopsies.
- residents will learn to manage a wide range of medical conditions commonly seen in rural populations, including management of chronic disease, acute illnesses and injuries
- Trainees will have ample opportunity to explore a plethora of outdoor recreation including numerous downhill and nordic skiing facilities, (Titcomb Mountain, Sugarloaf, Saddleback, Sunday River) and various opportunities to hike, fish, and explore the natural beauty that western Maine offers
Housing
On-site housing is offered at no cost to the learner at the Dixon House, when space is available. If space is not available at the Dixon House, then the resident may request funds from MERGE to reimburse for housing in Farmington, per the MERGE housing policy.
