The 2025 RELA cohort has been selected. The Rural Education Leaders Academy is designed for educators and preceptors in a rural setting. Healthcare professionals of different disciplines and professions may apply. Anyone interested in joining a future cohort can message us here to request an application.
RELA is a 12-month longitudinal education and leadership program for rural faculty who wish to enhance their medical education teaching and leadership skills to become local rural education leaders.

Applications for the 2025 RELA cohort are due October 31st, 2024.
Objective:
Provide rural faculty with the knowledge, skills and competence to be local leaders and advocates for graduate medical education in their communities.
Goals:
- Participants will graduate the program with:
- Graduate medical education literacy
- Skills to complete a medical education quality-improvement or scholarly project
- Be part of a rural learning community and connect with other medical education leaders in the state
- Tools to advance academic careers
Structure and Learning Community:
- The RELA cohort will include up to ten learners including physician faculty and interprofessional faculty
- The course will include nine seminars, one simulation workshop, and attendance at the annual MERGE Conference
- Four sessions will be in-person. Two will be held in Portland, one will be in the mountain region, and one will be down east. All other sessions will be virtual
- Participants will have a formal mentorship. During this time, all participants will complete and disseminate a quality improvement or scholarly project.
- RELA will provide $5,000 for salary support to release faculty from clinical duties ~5%. Reimbursement will be available for lodging and mileage for in-person meetings farther than a one hour’s drive
