Each month, on the second Friday at 12:00 PM, a guest presenter leads a session on a healthcare education topic with a focus on supporting healthcare educators in rural Maine.

Evidence-Based Strategies to Improve Learning and How to Implement Them in Medical Education

Presented by Annie Derthick, PhD

Director of Behavioral Science, Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency


This 30-minute virtual session will review six evidence-based methods to improve learning and how to apply this information to medical education. Attendees will be able to:

  • Identify at least one way to implement learning strategies in everyday practice of educating medical learners
  • Access multiple follow-up resources and action steps to develop competency in the domain of learning theory and practice implementing learning strategy in teaching

Dr. Annie Derthick is a clinical psychologist and the Director of Behavioral Science at the Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency. She also serves as the Associate Program Director. In that capacity, Dr. Derthick oversees the process of resident evaluation. She is also involved in faculty development, resident remediation, curriculum development, and program evaluation. Dr. Derthick serves as the Chair to the MERGE Executive Council, which oversees the fiduciary and strategic vision for the MERGE Collaborative.
