Educational Objective
To provide the trainee with an intensive experience caring for patients with severe and persistent mental illnesses, often with co-occurring personality disorders and substance use disorders, admitted to a state psychiatric hospital through civil commitments and various forensic court orders.
Experiences and Procedures
- Participate in morning report and inpatient rounds
- Participate in and help facilitate multidisciplinary treatment team meetings
- Attend court commitment hearings, administrative hearings (e.g., for medication over objection requests), and hearings for patients adjudicated Not Criminally Responsible who are seeking court privileges
- Present a Clinical Case Conference
- Be involved in the full spectrum of inpatient care in a state psychiatric hospital setting including initial evaluations, weekly progress assessments, and discharge planning
- Collaborate with a general medicine service to assess and treat co-occurring medical disorders
- Assist in writing Institutional Reports and Annual Reports that are submitted to forensic evaluators and the court when a Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) patient requests privileges
- Assist in writing Progressive Treatment Plans (PTPs) to help patients maintain adherence to treatment following discharge
