Educational Objective
To provide the GME learner with clinical experience in a rural Migrant Agricultural Worker Primary Care
By the end of this elective with MMHP, learners will…
- Be exposed to the unique challenges and rewards of providing medical care for migrant and seasonal farmworkers
- Gain an in-depth understanding of the social, political, occupational, cultural and community factors that influence the health of migrant and seasonal farmworkers.
- Reflect on their role as physician and advocate as it relates to this marginalized community or others with whom they may work in the future
Experiences and Procedures
Provide acute and primary care for migrant and seasonal farmworkers as part of an interdisciplinary team in a mobile medical unit setting
- Participate in post-clinic interdisciplinary team debriefs to prioritize and plan the logistics of clinical care plans
- Engage in discussion and reflection with other learners and experienced MMHP providers around the clinical, ethical and structural challenges inherent in providing health care to marginalized communities

- Broccoli: July – October – Aroostook County
- Blueberries: July – August – Washington County / Downeast
- Apples: September – October – Androscoggin & Oxford counties
- Wreathing: November – December – Washington County / Downeast
Housing
The Maine Mobile Health Program coordinates housing for the entire field team. The specific site will depend on the time of year and where the farmworker communities are located.
