Educational Objective

To Provide the GME learner with a general rural family medicine outpatient practice experience in a multi-physician and nurse practitioner primary care practice. Western Maine Primary Care is a level three patient-centered medical home (PCMH) and a designated Rural Health Center. 

Experiences and Procedures

  • Our practice, which consists of six physicians and three advanced practice providers is committed to providing evidenced based quality care; advancing education of health care providers including residents and medical students; and participating in translational research 
  • Work with a fellowship trained integrative medicine family medicine physician providing consults to primary care patients that include OMT and acupuncture services. 
  • Work with a family physician with a special interest in woman’s health who performs Nexplanon insertion/removal, IUD insertion/removal, endometrial biopsy, and cervical polyp removal. 
  • Work with a family medicine physician who is a doctor of osteopathy who provides a variety of OMT services including HVLA, muscle energy, facilitated articular release, strain/counterstain and cranial sacral work. 
  • Work with several family physicians who provide integrated medication-assisted treatment (IMAT) services to patients with opioid use disorder prescribing and monitoring Suboxone (buprenorphine-naloxone) treatment. 
  • Participate in a daily 30 minute clinical provider meeting to discuss clinical questions and cases with all the family physicians and nurse practitioners in the practice. 
  • Perform outpatient dermatology procedures including cryotherapy of warts, skin tags, and actinic keratosis; shave biopsies/excisions of atypical skin lesions; punch biopsies of rashes/skin lesions.

Western Maine Health is associated with Stephens Memorial Hospital. Limited housing is available on the Stephens Memorial Campus on a first-come first-served basis.
