Educational Objective

To provide the GME learner with clinical experience in a carceral setting.

Experiences and Procedures

  • Providing medical intakes for newly incarcerated residents. Addressing previously diagnosed chronic conditions and screening for acute medical conditions. 
  • Providing annual health assessments on residents.  Addressing annual preventive screening, chronic care concerns and management and acute medical needs. 
  • Opportunity to address acute needs through a daily sick call system.  Including procedures, drawing labs, etc. 
  • Participate in hepatitis C management team meetings. 
  • Opportunity to work with Nurse Practitioners with extensive experience of working with incarcerated individuals. 
  • Opportunity to observe and understand dental issues in this population. 
  • Population includes male, female and transgender individuals.  It may involve management of hospice or working in the assisted living population. 
  • Disease states are varied from chronic renal failure, cardiac issues, chronic musculoskeletal complaints, etc 

Housing
