ACGME Osteopathic Recognition and in a designated osteopathic position within their residency.
Duration for Elective: 2 weeks
Rotation Director: Anna Veach, DO, C-NMM/OMM
Educational Objective
This two-week elective rotation is designed to broaden osteopathic knowledge, further skills in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), and solidify the osteopathic approach to care of a rural patient population. Under the mentorship of Maine-Dartmouth’s osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine faculty, resident physicians will refine and strengthen foundational osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques and learn advanced techniques through treating patients of all ages in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The experience features a high volume of pediatric and OB treatment opportunities as well as exposure to functional and integrative medicine approaches in rural osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine practice. By the end of the rotation, residents will:
- Gain exposure to a diversity of ONMM clinicians, patients, and adjunct approaches to care
- Build proficiency in the application of direct and indirect osteopathic medicine techniques
- Gain exposure to a diversity of injection techniques such as dry needling, trigger point injections, and prolotherapy
- Develop experience with advanced OMM techniques including osteopathy in the cranial field, balanced ligamental treatment, and fascial distortion model.
- Gain proficiency in documentation, billing, and coding for OMM
- Gain exposure to functional and integrative medicine
- Understand how the application of an osteopathic approach to care can especially benefit patients in resource-limited settings
Educational Experiences
- Co-treating in the outpatient setting with ONMM faculty, with hands-on-hands teaching and feedback
- Shadowing functional/integrative medicine faculty in the outpatient setting
- Co-treating in the inpatient setting as part of the ONMM consultative service, with hands-on-hands teaching and feedback
